Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Tint in Lively - Review and Swatch

I have to be honest with you guys, the first time I tried this, I hated it. I didn't try it under the right conditions and I didn't give it a chance. I picked it up again a few days ago and now I love it!

I got this last Fall in a set of Tarte products that Sephora had as as 500 point perk rewards thing. I got some good stuff in there and some not so good stuff. I have already reviewed two of the items in that set on this blog - a bronzer and a finishing powder. Anyway, back to this product. The colour I got, "Lively", is described as hot pink and that is exactly what it is! It is loud and is not for the faint of heart. You would be hard pressed to find Tiffany D sporting off this colour! The first time I tried it on was at the end of a long day, I was in my PJs, my makeup was worn off, and I was just goofing around. I though the colour was obnoxious and insane. The product also smells of mint big time and at that hour, I didn't have the stomach for it. I put this puppy aside and forgot about it.

I must digress for a moment  - I have been meaning to tell all of you that I have been having some serious lip issues over the past few months. My mother gave me this Pears soap that had been taken off of the market and she swore I needed to try it. It worked fine for months and I was happy with it. I went away on a cruise in September with the hubby and didn't take it with me. When I came home and used it, it was like I threw acid on my lips. The swelled up and became inflamed. They went scaly and starting peeling constantly. Somehow I developed an allergy to the soap. Maybe that is why they took it off of the market! So stupid of me. At first, I didn't know for sure that it was the soap. I thought maybe I burnt my lips on the trip and my tender burnt lips had a reaction to the soap. So I put the soap down and used other facial cleansers that I had. Everything I tried seemed to constantly inflame them. I felt so gross walking around with an orange ring around my lips and constantly peeling, shredding, cracking lips. It was so nasty and I felt so self-conscious and uncomfortable. My lips felt like they were constantly on fire. Some days were agony. Nothing helped except Vaseline gave me some relief. So many things irritated my lips during this period that I wasn't sure after awhile what exactly caused the problem in the first place.

My lips finally started slowly healing in late November. I can't tell you how many facial cleansers I set aside which I started to think were making the problem worse or might be the cause of it. I picked up that Pears soap again and sure enough, it was like I threw battery acid on my mouth again. I kid you not my lips only started getting better again two weeks ago. That Pears soap is ancient history now and I curse it! I was getting so desperate I was going to go and see a dermatologist. I read online that applying ice cubes to your lips helps if you have had an allergic reaction to something and your lips are affected. The ice cubes seriously helped.

Enter Tarte's LipSurgence. I picked this up again a few days ago, thinking what the hell, I will give it another shot. The ingredients are very good and there are not a lot of chemicals in it. I have been trying to stick to natural lip products mostly since I started having my problem. This product soothed my lips and they felt very comfortable and protected. The moisture that the product gave me was incredible. The mint in it calmed my lips. My lips are not 100% back yet, but they are 85% back now and this product is going to be my lifeline for a little while. You can put a beige gloss over the colour if you wish to tone down the colour. It is very vibrant though and the colour really stays on almost all day, even after eating. I got a few compliments on the colour too. I can tell you right now that I will be picking up more colours for sure. This is one of the best lip products that I have found in a long time. I am so glad I gave it another try. I didn't know what I was missing. This is why I insist on trying products a few times before I review them for you, because sometimes you just have to give something a chance.

Here is the swatch of Lively:

These lip tints are $24 U.S. and $29 Canadian. They are available at Sephora and on Tarte's website (if you live in the U.S.). You gotta try one of these. They make the Clinique chubby sticks seem dry and I like those as many people do!
